How did Ecotourism Flourish Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea in South Croatia. Many guide books refer to the city as the Crown Jewel of the Adriatic. The major industries are trade and tourism. However, few years ago, ecotourism became a vital part of Dubrovnik life.
The city is relatively small with around 45,000 inhabitants. This makes it a perfect place to spend some quiet and quality time. Therefore, today many travelers visit Dubrovnik to support this sustainability-conscious movement and to enjoy the panoramic views.
Hotels Eco-Measures in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik hotels are taking measures to protect the environment. As this might be a smart marketing strategy, it is equally very beneficial to the city’s nature.
Many hotel chains and lodging industry leaders are going the extra mile to put eco-friendly plans into action. For instance, Radisson Blu, Sun Gardens has built a green roof and installed an HVAC system that is cooled by the ocean. A complete ecosystem to support sustainable tourism.
Equally and not very far away in the peninsula of Istria, another hotel is taking proactive measures. Kempinski Adriatic uses stored rainwater to keep their golf course green. This methodology keeps the grass well hydrated and at the same time avoids ineffective rain water drainage.
Moreover, most of Dubrovnik hotels grow their own herbs for use in their restaurants’ kitchens. This serves as a local delight for same-minded tourists in the eco-friendly arena.
Dubrovnik and Croatia’s Outlook towards Ecotourism
Croatia is a stunning country that is equally aware of preserving its beautiful nature. Therefore, it’s renowned for having some of the best air quality in the world. On top of that, water purity and pristine landscapes constitute most of the country’s terrains.
Croatia’s Ministry of Environment and Energy deploys various measures to protect its nature. The ministry is always trying to make residents and tourists more informed about the need to reduce litter, increase recycling and enhance waste management.
It is remarkable how local communities in Croatia and especially Dubrovnik are eagerly protective of their environment. This is manifested in many areas of preserving their country’s air, land and water quality.
For instance, the number of supermarkets selling pre-packed goods has sharply increased in recent years. This is the result of tourism, where more locals move to the touristy areas for better life standards. Hence food consumption increases for domestic and tourism purposes.
On the other hand, the high numbers of tourists flocking to Croatia and particularly Dubrovnik, are further fueling the problem of sustainability. Therefore, the Croatian government has put in place strict measures to combat this problem.
However, it still allows tourists to enjoy the places around the country through responsible tourism .The country introduced a number of policies in this regard. As a result, it has managed to eliminate virtually 100 percent of glass and plastic-bottle litter in certain areas. This in turn encourages people to bring any glass or plastic beverage bottle to designated markets and they’ll receive refunds of 0.50 Croatian Kunas per item.
Blue Flag Beaches in Croatia
There are 120 Blue Flags in Croatia, which is relatively a high number and it is on the rise. They are 99 beaches, 19 marinas and 2 water-bodies. This clearly gives Croatia a high ranking among other countries when it comes to the quality of clear and pristine waters.
Taking into consideration the elaborate criteria to gain this title, the figure becomes further impressive. Some of the measures for Blue Flags consist of cleanliness, wheelchair access, dog control, first aid, safety and environmental information. Moreover, continuous audits are held for compliance checks.
The marina management measures contain requirements for the information about the environment, adequate containers for trash and special waste. Moreover, clean toilets, washing facilities and safety equipment are strictly monitored.
